Catholic Charities of Trenton - A New Look for online and offline marketing

Overview
Catholic Charities of Trenton is a regional provider of charitable services for New Jersey. The organization serves thousands and has seen a major increase in usage, due to a reduction in government programs. This puts a greater financial strain on the organization to meet the growing needs of the community.

Like most non-profits, a majority of funding relies on charitable contributions from individuals and businesses. This requires a substantial marketing effort to reach potential donors, which until now, has been through traditional methods. Catholic Charities did have a basic Web site, but it was outdated, difficult to maintain, and confusing to navigate. In order to stay competitive, an over-haul of their Web site was needed to reach new donors while staying on par with other non-profits.

Challenges
The biggest challenge was keeping the many aspects of the project under a tight budget, while maintaining high design standards. What started off as a Web site re-design, quickly grew to include a logo identity, tag line, print ads and a major brochure project. We now needed to establish design standards that were adaptable to not only Web, but low budget, single color print work.

The budget required us to use supplied photography when possible, much of which was challenging to incorporate. Custom photo shoots were out of the question, as well as rights-managed stock photos. There was the possibility of royalty-free photography, but it needed to work with existing shots in terms of color and subject matter.

The Web site needed to be more than just static pages, but also offer the ability to self-publish content. This was carried across three major sections, with the restricted budget in mind, and was designed as an easy-to-use Web interface.

Objectives
Our main objective was developing a design theme that could easily adapt to online as well as different types of print usage. We needed a design using graphics and photos that didn't adhere to a specific size or shape, so it could be adapted easily to various types of media.

For the Web site, the design needed to allow flexibility to grow from a dynamic standpoint. Color and font selection needed to connect to both print and Web. The site would be built with re-purposed code to save costs in the dynamic publishing function.

Solutions
The final re-design effort was carried into a new Web site that emphasized an uplifting message of hope through compelling photos and light, fresh color. The challenge of supplied photography was met by retouching existing photos along with the careful purchase of royalty-free photography. This kept the quality high and the budget in check as the royalty-free images were re-purposed into print material and ads incurring no additional cost.

Dragonfly also worked with Catholic Charities to help them market more effectively to the many large businesses in the area. With hundreds of charities pitching for corporate donations every day, it's important to not only stand out visually, but also offer corporations different sponsorship opportunities and well deserved recognition. We helped them realize and market the unique aspects of their charity and proposed ways to bring sponsorship and causes to the forefront.

The site features dynamic publishing that allows staff to update events and news for the Web site. More than just text updates, the system allows font styles, attached related files and images to be easily uploaded. The print side of the project started with typical business card/letterhead but quickly grew to MS word templates, flyers, print materials, and ad campaigns. Our design template approach worked well across the different uses and kept costs to a minimum.

The most recent addition to the project has been a new 12 page annual report/marketing brochure for Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton. When we were asked to do a services brochure and separate annual report, Dragonfly came up with the idea of merging the two and using the savings to produce a higher-quality professional piece. The brochure has an inside pocket to allow additional material to be presented. Timely pieces like calendars and events would be printed in-house on an as-needed basis from our templates; another cost and time saver.

Results
The final Web site and marketing campaign has given new life to Catholic Charities fundraising efforts. We worked hard to not only develop good design, but also pieces that communicate effectively. The results have been a renewed interest in marketing within the agency, as well as increased donations.

With the success of our initial materials, the client has called us back to develop additional pieces and Web site features. We're currently developing a new Intranet site that allows the hundreds of employees to share internal information without relying on mail and fax.
